Mental Wellbeing is Happiness: Chinese Mental Wellbeing Day

The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, is inviting Chinese speaking residents to learn about mental health at a Chinese Mental Wellbeing Day.

“In celebration of Mental Health Month, the City of Canterbury Council is proud to present Mental Wellbeing is Happiness: Chinese Mental Wellbeing Day,” Mayor Robert Furolo said.

“The aim of the day is to raise awareness of good mental health and wellbeing amongst the Chinese speaking community and to break down the stigma relating to mental illness.

“This year, Mental Health Week has been extended over the entire month of October with the focus on ‘Good friends help us bounce back’, promoting the importance of building and maintaining good friendships in the building of our resilience.

“A local Chinese doctor will discuss how your GP can help with your mental wellbeing, and how they can help if you or someone you know experiences mental illness.

“Other speakers will share their personal stories of living positively with mental illness, including a person who has experienced it themselves and someone who has cared for someone with a mental illness.

“Local mental health and Chinese community services will also be present, where participants can find out about local services for the Chinese community, as well as free information on a variety of aspects of staying mentally and physically healthy.

“Participants can also participate in a Tai Chi class and enjoy a light lunch.

“One in five Australians will directly experience a mental illness in their lifetime so it’s important for us to get the message out there about the help available and what we can do to promote positive health.

“The well-being of everyone in the community is an essential ingredient in building a healthy, happy and productive society,” Mayor Furolo said.

The event will be held on Thursday 28 October from 9.30am to 1pm at the Lakemba Senior Citizens Centre, Cnr The Boulevarde and Croydon St, Lakemba.

Bookings are essential on 9789 9300. If you are looking after someone and require support to attend this event, contact the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre on 1800 052 222.

This day is supported by the Mental Health Association NSW, and organised in collaboration with Carer Assist, CASS, Central Sydney GP Network, Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre – Inner West, Inner West Respite Services, Sydney South West Area Health Service and Transcultural Mental Health Centre.
